What is studying like?
Teaching
This school-based course is designed to prepare Beginning Teachers for work in schools to ensure that they are equipped to stay in the profession. School-Based PGCE Primary teacher training aims to enable Beginning Teachers (BTs) who have previously gained a degree qualification at Level 6 to transfer knowledge and skills into primary settings in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status*. To be eligible to apply for teaching posts, Beginning Teachers must meet all of the current Teachers’ Standards when summatively assessed on them at the end of the course for Qualified Teacher Status. However, to become the evidence-informed problem-solving practitioners who can make a significant difference to the lives of the pupils they work with and gain QTS they need a sound theoretical underpinning provided by the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Level 7. The academic and professional dimensions to Initial Teacher Education are symbiotic. The abilities to address complex issues and develop critical thinking skills are important dimensions to the university-based taught modules.
Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job.
How is it assessed?
Assessment methods include essays, portfolios, presentations, and practical teaching in school.
After being formally assessed against the national statutory requirements, you can be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status*.
The course provides an opportunity to gain Master's-level credits by submitting appropriate assignments.
Independent learning
Outside of timetabled sessions, you will need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for course work, presentation, and portfolio subject knowledge. Our library and online resources will support your further reading and research. You can also join a range of student societies, including Education.
How is the programme accredited?
The University of Derby has co designed and accredited the curriculum and will recommend QTS and the University of Greenwich will make the academic award.
How much does the Teach Thurrock programme cost?
Tuition fees:
For the academic year 2024-25 the Teach Thurrock Primary Partnership will charge a tuition fee of £9250.
Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies (estimate, £150 per year).
Placements: you are expected to pay for your transport to your placements during the year.
Trainees will be given a £10,000 bursary to support their training and this will be fully explained before any placement is finalised.

On successful completion of the programme, the Teach Thurrock Primary Partnership supports each candidate in gaining a teaching post in either one of the partnership schools or in Thurrock. Candidates may be able to take up their post from July 2025 through early start programmes in individual schools but this is negotiable.
